The Focus of Our Efforts

Early Childhood Development Centre

The biggest need identified and communicated by the Griekwastad community is the lack of enough Early Childhood Development (ECD) opportunities for the many pre-school children in the town. This is the reason for the first program of Voetspore van Hoop being implemented, being the Early Childhood Development Centre (ECD Centre) which opened its doors in April 2018.
40 Children between the ages of 3 and 5 years are currently enrolled at the centre and we have a growing waiting list of 30 children. We desperately need to prepare 2 more classrooms and appoint 2 more ECD practitioners in order to address this immediate need and to accommodate the children on the current waiting list.

Our children are don't only receive quality ECD education, but proper nutrition is just as important part for their development. Children enrolled in our ECD centre receives 2 balanced meals and 2 snacks every day. The produce from our own vegetable gardens and chicken coops is of great value in this regard.

We are using the Caritas Kinderland learning plan curriculum and are supported, monitored and evaluated by the dedicated team from Caritas Community Focus. The team from Caritas are well experienced in providing support to ECD  Centres as they have more than 15 ECD's in the Northern Cape to whome they are providing support services.

Community Development

Most of our efforts pertaining to this program involve studying new approaches and developing innovative ways to implement them.

Our ECD Centre is very important for our efforts towards community development. Through the children in our ECD centre, we automatically have access to the communities they live in. We are able to use our ECD centre as leverage in successful community development. The parents of our children are benefitting immediately through the parent guidance we provide to them.

We evaluate our success in this field by gathering qualitative and quantitative data, and using that information to measure shifts and changes from our baseline measurements.

The youth also forms a very important part of our community development efforts. Through our holiday programs we invest intensely in them.

We hosted the very first Draadkar Grand Prix for Griekwastd in July 2019. This event was such a raging success that it is now an annual event. This gives us yet another innovative way and opportunity for focused community development.
